Well before the engagement day, every family selects 2 representatives from their aspect.  The representatives will be members of the family or friends, however are typically a married couple who have a cheerful family of their own. Though there are 2 representatives, the man is the one who truly does the illustration, requesting for fiancée's hand in wedding on behalf of the fiance's family, exchanging gifts, and controlling the flow of the ceremony.

In addition to choosing their representatives, the families get along to barter the dowry and a date and time for the ceremony. Historically, the date and time are selected based on the fiance's and fiancée's dates and hours of birth, however in a very fast-paced society, like that of the U.., it has always a matter of convenience. 

Several days before engagement day the fiance's folks prepare gifts to proffer to the fiancée's family.  These gifts embrace betel leaves and areca nut fruits (trau cau), wine, tea, husband-wife cake (banh phu the), sticky rice, alternative foods, and jewellery. They're put in trays and wrapped in red plastic paper, with the assumption that red can bring good luck. Additionally to the opposite foods, a full pig is roasted and placed in a very giant tray, to be carried to the fiancée's home by 2 young men.  Mean while, the fiancé is obtaining the ring prepared, and also the fiancée, making ready herself for the ceremony.

On engagement day, the fiance's family bear the gifts to the fiancée's home and is greeted by the fiancée's family. Once everyone seems to be within, fiance's representative asks the opposite representative for the fiancée's hand in wedding on behalf of his party.  The fiancée's representative graciously accepts the gifts and presents the fiancée to her in-laws to be united.  Together, the engaged couple prays in front of the family altar and asks their ancestor for approval.  When the prayer is finished, the fiancé places the engagement ring on his fiancée's finger.

Following the ring presentation, the representatives formally introduce their party's members of the family in line with his or her family role.  From this moment forward, the fiancé and fiancée are official members of their in-law family, and will sit down with their in-law members of the family by their respective roles--"dad", "mom", "uncle", "aunt", and thus forth. the parents in come settle for a new son or daughter into their family. Once the ceremony, the families celebrate the momentous occasion with a feast hold by the fiancée's family. It's expected that half the food gifts received be unwrapped and shared before the fiance's family leaves.

The day after the engagement, the engaged couple and their parents visit the neighbors, friends, co-workers, and relatives who couldn't take part in the ceremony. They create some betel leaves and areca nuts, tea and/or wines to unfold the great fortune.
